Red eye disease outbreak confirmed in Buliisa
Buliisa: The Buliisa district health department has confirmed an outbreak of red eye disease with over 200 cases registered.
Red eye disease, also known as conjunctivitis, is a condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva the thin layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids.
Dr. Robert Mugabe, the Buliisa District Health Educator confirmed the disease outbreak in the sub counties of Biiso, Buliisa, Kigwera and Ngwedo disclosing that they have discovered so far 220 cases of red eyes.
According to Mugabe, red eyes can result from various factors, including viral or bacterial infections, allergic reactions (such as pollen or dust), exposure to smoke or chemicals, and underlying medical conditions (like dry eye syndrome or autoimmune diseases).
Common symptoms include redness, itching, a burning sensation, excessive tearing, and discharge from the eyes. In more severe cases, patients may experience blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and swelling of the eyelids.
Mugabe stressed that the disease is highly contagious and can spread from person to person through direct contact, sharing personal items (such as towels or pillowcases), facial contact, or sharing eye drops or eyeglasses.
The health expert therefore advised the public to avoid sharing items with infected individuals, including pillows, washcloths, towels, eye drops, or eyeglasses.
He noted that treatment depends on the underlying cause. For viral or bacterial infections, antiviral or antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed.
Allergic conjunctivitis can be managed with antihistamine eye drops or oral medications. ‘’Patients should avoid rubbing the eyes, use clean towels and tissues, and refrain from sharing makeup brushes or eye drops.’’
Some of the preventive measures include regular handwashing, avoiding touching the face, and maintaining proper hygiene to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading infections.
