Rampant theft cases worry Kikuube residents
The situation has become so dire that there are concerns about potential mob justice as frustrated residents seek justice on their own.
Kikuube: The surge in theft cases in Kikuube district, particularly in Kiburara village, Kabwoya Sub County, has become a major cause for concern among residents and local leaders.
According to Deo Kwizera, the LC I chairperson for Kiburara A village, they have been witnessing an average of five theft cases per week over the past two months.
These incidents involve housebreaking, livestock theft, and pilfering of garden crops.
One of the affected individuals, Atanazio Bikangiso, revealed that he has lost more than 10 pigs to thieves.
He suspects that local hunters and redundant residents are involved in the thefts. As a result, many locals have stopped rearing animals out of fear of losing them to criminals.
The situation has become so dire that there are concerns about potential mob justice as frustrated residents seek justice on their own.
In response to the escalating thefts, Kisembo Gideon officer in charge of the Karama police post, has urged residents to form village security committees.
These committees can help supplement the police manpower, as the police force currently lacks sufficient resources to protect people and their property effectively.
Additionally, residents are encouraged to identify and report suspected criminals to the authorities for appropriate action.
It’s unfortunate that theft continues to disrupt the lives of Kikuube residents, but efforts to enhance security and community vigilance can make a difference in curbing criminal activities.
The security meeting was also attended by the Kikuube district chairperson, Peter Banura who emphasized on personal security and reporting any suspected criminal to relevant authorities.
