Property worth millions destroyed as fire guts commercial building in Hoima

At the front of the building were several businesses, including produce shops, boutiques, and small hotels.

Hoima: A devastating fire has destroyed a commercial building near the Hoima Central Market, leaving property and merchandise worth millions of shillings in ruins.

The blaze, whose cause remains unknown, is believed to have started from a bar located in the rear section of the building at around 2:00 PM on Thursday afternoon.

At the front of the building were several businesses, including produce shops, boutiques, and small hotels.

Although the bar suffered the most damage, several front-facing shops also incurred heavy losses some due to hasty evacuation efforts and others from water used by police firefighters to extinguish the flames.

Eyewitnesses and some business owners suspect the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Norman Ntare, the LC1 Chairperson of Bank Cell, called on the public to exercise caution when handling electricity and charcoal stoves, both of which pose a significant fire risk.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine South Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and noted that investigations into the exact cause of the fire are currently ongoing.
