Kigezi: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commended missionaries for spearheading the establishment of the churches, which helped in fighting ignorance by constructing schools and health facilities.

This was contained in the speech delivered by the vice president, Jessica Alupo, during the centenary celebration of Rushoroza Cathedral parish held at Rushoroza grounds.

President Museveni said that before missionaries came to Kigezi, people were illiterate, poor, and underdeveloped. But the missionary work did not stop at spiritual conversion; it involved teaching the new converts how to read, write, and count.

He also said that the church helped in the establishment of several schools and health facilities, which helped people to be educated and learn the importance of going for medical checkups.

Museveni commended Bishop Rubaramira for building on what previous bishops stopped doing towards the development of the region.

Alupo delivered a contribution of 50 million shillings from the president to help in the rehabilitation of the cathedral parish.

The Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Calistus Rubaramira, who preached during the mass that was presided over by the representative of Pope Francis in Uganda, His Excellency Archbishop Luigi Bianco, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, commended Missionaries of Africa who helped Catholic faith in the establishment of Rushoroza Cathedral Parish.

He therefore asked the Christians to renew and strengthen their faith, both in church and in their families.
