Police launch inquiry into gruesome murder of Arua DHO
As investigations continue, authorities emphasize the importance of dialogue and legal resolution of conflicts to maintain peace in the community.
Arua: Police in Arua have pledged swift justice for the murder of Dr. Paul Bishop Drileba, the Acting District Health Officer (DHO) of Arua, who was brutally killed on November 23, 2024, in Oyeku Village, Ombokoro Parish, Ajia Sub-County.
The tragic incident unfolded as Dr. Drileba, 55, accompanied his lawyer, surveyors, and workers to demarcate the boundaries of land he had acquired in September this year.
A group of about 50 armed individuals ambushed the team, wielding crude weapons such as machetes, axes, bows, and arrows. Dr. Drileba succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack, while one surveyor was critically injured. Other members of the team managed to escape unharmed.
Preliminary investigations by the West Nile Regional Police indicate that the incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute over the land in question. Members of the Oyeku clan reportedly contested the ownership of the land, claiming historical ties to it.
In a statement, Police Spokesperson Collins Asea said: “Preliminary findings suggest that the land in question was contested by members of the Oyeku clan, who claim historical ownership. The attack appears to have stemmed from unresolved disputes regarding the land’s sale and ownership.”
He further clarified that the attackers were motivated by grievances over the land, as evidenced by the untouched personal belongings of the deceased, including UGX 1,767,000.
The case, registered as CRB 249/2024, is under active investigation, with police vowing to identify and apprehend those responsible. Authorities have called for calm, urging the public to resolve disputes through lawful channels.
“Police remains committed to ensuring justice for the deceased. Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the attack,” Asea added.
The murder has drawn widespread condemnation, with community members and leaders expressing outrage over the violence. Many have highlighted the recurring issue of land disputes in the region and called for stronger measures to prevent such tragedies.
As investigations continue, authorities emphasize the importance of dialogue and legal resolution of conflicts to maintain peace in the community.
