Police impound California bus in Arua

The bus was then returned to Arua Central Police Station.

Arua: Police in Arua on Monday, December 16, 2024, impounded a bus belonging to California Bus Services for being unroadworthy.

The bus, which was headed to Kampala, had its registration number UBF 016L (Scania) and was driven by Bada Stephen. It was intercepted around 9:14 AM at Enzeva during a snap checkpoint conducted by a team of police officers.

The bus was then returned to Arua Central Police Station.

The action followed the failure of California Bus Services to address a previous warning issued by the District Traffic Officer (DTO).

According to the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Collins Asea, the bus had been declared unfit for road use by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) in September 2024.

Asea stated, “The bus, which was en route to Kampala carrying passengers, was deemed unfit for road use by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) in September 2024 (reference TSD 07/16/13/2024).”

Despite several warnings from the DTO and IOV, the necessary corrective actions were not taken by the bus management.

The police are urging all road users, particularly during the festive season, to adhere to road safety rules and regulations to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users.

In an effort to reduce the high accident rates, the Traffic Police nationwide continue to work on promoting self-regulation and discipline among road users through sensitization programs.

These programs engage motorcycle taxi operators, bus operators, and include radio and TV campaigns.
