Kampala: President Yoweri Museveni called on Christians to embody the principles of their faith by leading through example, emphasizing the need for personal integrity and ethical behavior.
His remarks were made during the inauguration of the new All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero on November 1, 2024, an event coinciding with All Saints’ Day celebrations.
Speaking before a large congregation, Museveni expressed disappointment with those who identify as Christians yet do not reflect their beliefs in their actions.
He stressed the importance of demonstrating Christian values, particularly to those outside the church community. “Judge people by what they do, not the denominations where they worship,” he asserted.
The newly constructed cathedral, designed to seat 5,000 worshippers, features a striking 45-meter bell tower and includes several amenities such as a Bishop’s office, chapels, a coffee center, and a library. Museveni praised the building committee for their dedication and success in bringing this project to fruition.
Reflecting on his own faith journey, the President shared insights from his upbringing, noting that his mother was a devoted revivalist. He also urged Christians to practice discipline in their lives, treating their bodies as temples of the Lord, and avoiding vices such as alcohol and theft.
In addressing unity among various Christian denominations, Museveni criticized sectarianism and highlighted the importance of actions over religious affiliation, citing the parable of the Good Samaritan. He encouraged all Christians to focus on their deeds as a means of promoting a safer and more cohesive society.
The event also marked the consecration of Canon Fredrick Jackson Baalwa as Assistant Bishop, with attendees celebrating the cathedral’s significant architectural and spiritual milestone for the Anglican community in Uganda.
In a show of personal commitment, Museveni announced a donation of Shs 100 million from his own resources, alongside a pledge of Shs 1 billion in the upcoming budget to support the cathedral’s continued development.
The day’s proceedings included speeches from various dignitaries, including Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi, who emphasized the cathedral’s historical significance and its role in transforming the community. Archbishop Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu also expressed gratitude for the support received, highlighting the cathedral’s importance in fostering unity and faith among Christians.
With a total construction cost of Shs 25 billion, the All Saints Cathedral represents a monumental achievement for the Anglican Church in Uganda, reflecting both a rich history and a hopeful future for worship and community service in Kampala.
