Hoima: More than 100 members of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and other opposition parties have officially defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The mass defection took place during the belated NRA/M Liberation Day celebrations for Hoima District at Kigorobya Muslim Primary School in Kigorobya Town Council over the weekend.
The defectors were received by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, who also serves as the NRM Vice Chairperson for the Western Region.
Kamugisa Ceazar, a former FDC member, explained his decision to leave the party, citing a lack of vision within FDC.
“I have decided to defect to the ruling NRM party because FDC has no vision. In all the years I was a member, I didn’t see any clear direction in the party,” he stated.
Similarly, Lawrence Damulira, a former NUP member, pledged to mobilize support for President Yoweri Museveni and safeguard votes during the upcoming 2026 general elections.
“I want to assure the NRM leadership that we shall protect the votes for the president and also safeguard the ballot papers during the 2026 elections,” he said.
Dr. Baryomunsi welcomed the defectors and instructed the district NRM party registrar to officially register them in the party’s yellow book. He also urged other opposition members to follow suit, emphasizing that joining NRM would contribute to the country’s development.
Vincent Savana Muhumuza, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Hoima District, expressed gratitude to the people of Bunyoro for their continued support of the ruling party. He reassured them that the NRM remains strong and continues to enjoy significant support in the region.
