Operationalization of Hoima city abattoir postponed

“The contractor hasn’t handed over the new abattoir to the city council, so we are waiting for the handover before transferring the butchers,” Kanusu said.

Hoima: The planned operationalization of the Shs5 billion Hoima City abattoir, initially scheduled for Monday, has been postponed to Thursday this week, according to city authorities.

The new abattoir, located in Bulera Cell, Hoima East Division, was set to replace the old slaughter site in Kiryateete, which was expected to be closed by Sunday, August 31, 2025. This announcement was made on August 19 by the Hoima City Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Hajji Badru Mugabi, during a stakeholders’ briefing.

However, on Monday morning, slaughtering activities were still ongoing at the Kiryateete site. One of the butchers, Julius Ayesiga, told our reporter that they were denied access to the new abattoir over the weekend.

“By today, we were supposed to be operating at the new abattoir, but we are still in Kiryateete. On Sunday, we took our animals to the new facility, but security personnel blocked us, saying they had not yet received permission to allow slaughtering there,” Ayesiga explained.

The delay, according to Robert Kanusu, Deputy RCC for Hoima East, is due to the contractor’s failure to officially hand over the facility to the city council.

“The contractor hasn’t handed over the new abattoir to the city council, so we are waiting for the handover before transferring the butchers,” Kanusu said.

Meanwhile, Hoima City Lord Mayor Brian Kaboyo cited the absence of the RCC, who is away following the death of his mother, as another reason for the postponement.

Despite the delay, city authorities maintain that operations at the new facility will commence by Thursday, pending formal handover and final logistical arrangements.
