Koboko: A deadly clash between rival youth groups has claimed the life of a local leader in Mengo Trading Center, Lobule Sub-County, Koboko District.
The incident, registered at Koboko Police Station under SD 18/23/04/2025 and CRB 187/2025, marks a violent escalation of long-standing tensions between the Paduku and Ponyona clans.
According to police reports, the latest confrontation erupted on the evening of April 22, 2025, around 6:00 PM, when youths from the Ponyona clan allegedly ambushed their Paduku counterparts.
Efforts by clan elders to mediate peace were unsuccessful. In the ensuing violence, Wassa Juma, a 63-year-old Local Council 1 Chairman of Adugule Village and a respected elder of the Paduku clan, was viciously attacked near Mengo Trading Center.
The attackers fled, leaving Juma with severe head injuries. He was rushed to Lobule Health Centre III by relatives but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speaking to reporters, West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea linked the fatal incident to an earlier altercation that occurred on April 19, 2025. That clash took place during separate disco events in the area and resulted in cross-reports of malicious damage and assault filed by both clans at Lobule Police Station on April 20.
The crime scene was processed by Scene of Crime Officer D/Sgt Alionzi Joseph under the supervision of SP Masereka Michael, District Police Commander of Koboko Central Police Station.
However, by the time police arrived, the victim’s body dressed in a red jersey and dark blue jeans had already been removed by his relatives.
Police have since arrested one suspect, identified as Sabir Hassan, who is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
In response to the rising tension, law enforcement has conducted community sensitization activities in an effort to restore calm between the two clans.
SP Asea noted that further details will be provided as investigations continue.
