NUP’s Nalukoola wins Kawempe North by-election

Nalukoola now takes over the parliamentary seat, reaffirming NUP’s political influence in Uganda’s capital.

Kawempe:  Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been declared the winner of the Kawempe North by-election, defeating his closest rival, Faridah Nambi of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Nalukoola secured a resounding victory with 17,764 votes, while Nambi garnered 8,593 votes, according to the final tally by the Electoral Commission.

The by-election, held on March 13, 2025, followed the vacation of the seat due to legal disputes that led to its annulment.

Following the announcement, Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, congratulated Nalukoola and the people of Kawempe North for what he described as a hard-fought victory against state oppression.

“Behold, the elected Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. Congratulations Nalukoola, congratulations to the people of Kawempe North. The diabolical state did so much evil right from nomination; our candidate was brutalized, the same thing happened to other leaders and supporters throughout the campaigns, and journalists were not spared either by the state’s madness. They even rigged at a number of polling stations, that’s why they beat up journalists and arrested others so that their evil plans don’t get exposed… but God has put all these crooks to shame,” Ssenyonyi stated.

Nalukoola’s victory reinforces NUP’s dominance in Kampala, particularly in opposition strongholds like Kawempe North.

The party’s leadership hailed the win as a testament to the people’s unwavering support for NUP’s agenda of change and accountability.

In his victory speech, Nalukoola thanked the voters for their trust and vowed to champion their interests in Parliament, particularly focusing on youth empowerment, service delivery, and human rights advocacy.

His closest rival, an independent candidate backed by the ruling NRM, conceded defeat but called for electoral reforms to ensure a fairer process in future elections. Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission commended the people of Kawempe for conducting themselves peacefully and orderly during the voting process.

Nalukoola now takes over the parliamentary seat, reaffirming NUP’s political influence in Uganda’s capital.
