NUP calls for equal distribution of natural resources

Additionally, the district has quality clay suitable for making bricks, tiles, and other products.

Arua: The recent discovery of natural resources in Yumbe district, including gold, uranium, and diamonds, presents both opportunities and challenges for the local community.

Yumbe District boasts abundant natural resources, which, if sustainably exploited, could provide a strong raw material base.

These resources include a small stretch of the River Nile and three central forest reserves: Mt. Kei natural forest reserve, Lodonga forest, and Koloa forest reserve.

Additionally, the district has quality clay suitable for making bricks, tiles, and other products.

The call for equal distribution of these resources is crucial. Local leaders and the government must engage in dialogue to ensure fair allocation.

Asega Habibu Jogo, the National Unity Platform deputy secretary for mobilization in northern Uganda, emphasizes that at least 40% of the resources should benefit the locals.

Lemeriga Fadhil, the prime minister of Aringa Kingdom in Yumbe, advocates for even more significant local participation, suggesting that Aringa Kingdom should receive at least 50% of the gold.

It’s essential for leaders to understand the Mineral Act and advocate from an informed perspective.

While foreign investors play a role in resource extraction, empowering local investors is equally important.

Lemeriga Fadhil’s call for prioritizing local empowerment aligns with the need to ensure that the benefits of resource exploitation reach the community.

The minerals found in the affected areas include gold, uranium, diamonds, and others.

These discoveries impact approximately four hectares of land.
