NGOs spearhead environment conservation in West Nile
Conservation efforts are crucial to combat these environmental challenges and ensure a suitable future.
Arua: The Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are taking action to conserve the environment in West Nile.
The consortium of civil society organizations, including Restitute Team Uganda (RERE-UG), Rural Initiative Alliance for Development (RIAD), Community Access to Inclusive Program (CAIP), and Stade Action for Community Empowerment (SACE), is distributing tree species to community members in West Nile.
Their goal is to restore degraded ecosystems impacted by human activities, especially due to the influx of refugees from neighboring countries.
By targeting institutions like schools and churches, they aim to mitigate climate change and promote cooperation within the community.
Hofin Jakwonga, the programs manager at RETE Uganda, highlights the challenge of people having insufficient information on environmental protection.
‘’The project aims to address this by promoting tree planting and advocating for environmental protection,’’ he notes.
Cheka Linda from the Community Access to Inclusive Program emphasizes the importance of trees for demarcating boundaries and as a source of income for families and community members.
Linda notes that soil assessment before planting or distributing seedlings ensures successful growth.
The increasing and prolonged droughts in many parts of the world are exacerbated by rampant tree logging without proper replacements.
Conservation efforts are crucial to combat these environmental challenges and ensure a suitable future.
