Mahagi: The Alur Djuganda of Mahagi Territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have a new traditional chief, Rwoth Defelaise Songa Ukiya III.
A royal team from Ker Alur officially enthroned Rwoth Ukiya III on Friday, December 13, 2024, during a royal ceremony held at his palace in Djalasiga, Mahagi Territory.
The Alur Djuganda Chiefdom is one of the eight Ker Alur chiefdoms in the DRC. The Alur Djuganda people, together with the Ang’al and a section of the Kakwa, from both Uganda and the DRC, are descendants of Thiful, the youngest of the Nyilak triplets, with Nyipir and Labongo being his siblings.
The enthronement ceremony involved rigorous cultural rituals over a three-day period, during which Rwoth Ukiya III and the Queen of Alur Djuganda underwent secluded mentorship sessions in the Kuvugu hut, away from the public eye.
In his speech, Rwoth Ukiya III pledged unwavering cultural allegiance to Ker Alur, led by Ubimu of Alur Rauni III, the supreme head (or Leb Tong) of the Luo people, who resides at Kaal Atyak Winam.
The official coronation of Rwoth Ukiya III will be held in February 2025, with His Royal Majesty Phillip Olarker Rauni III expected to attend as the Chief Guest. The exact date of the coronation will be announced later.
