NCHE to guide Gulu University on establishment of its campus in Kitgum

The letter requested that the Ministry of Education and Sports grant Gulu University's Kitgum campus constituency college status.

Kitgum: The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) is set to hold a meeting with the Gulu University Management on July 23, 2024, to guide the establishment of constituency college status for its Kitgum Campus.

This follows a letter dated May 8, 2024, written by the State Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees (OPM), who is also the Kitgum District Woman Representative, Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian.

The letter requested that the Ministry of Education and Sports grant Gulu University’s Kitgum campus constituency college status.

The Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, guided that the Gulu University Council and Senate should provide evidence of approval for granting its Kitgum Campus a Constituency College Status, as per the request of the Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees (OPM), following their consultation with the National Council for Higher Education, a body mandated to regulate higher education in Uganda.

Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian also mentioned that her request follows the outcry of the potential population of Kitgum and its surrounding districts, who have to travel long distances to access other academic courses, especially in the sciences, since the Kitgum Campus offers only a few art courses.

She recognized the consideration of the Ministry of Education and Sports and the National Council for Higher Education in seeing that this higher institution of learning attains its constituency status.

Mr. James Onono Ojok, the Gulu University Communication Officer, confirmed the development, saying that the university is expecting to meet the team from the National Council for Higher Education on July 23rd.

Kitgum District is dominated by certificate- and diploma-level institutions, including Kitgum Teachers’ Training Institute, Kitgum Technical College, Obyen Polytechnic College, and Kitgum Business Training Institute, among others.
