Nature fights back! Flash floods destroy police, URA offices in Buliisa

In 2020, over 3,500 people were displaced by floods in the area due to rising water levels in Lake Albert.

Buliisa: The government of Uganda, through the ministry of internal affairs, is relocating offices of the Uganda Police Marine Unit at Butiaba Station, Butiaba Town Council, in Buliisa District, after flash floods hit and destroyed some of the office buildings they have been operating in.

This comes after strong and heavy winds that recently blew Lake Albert waters from Democratic Republic of Congo and hit almost all police marine offices and the former URA office at Butiaba station.

Meanwhile, the URA office was allocated to Biiso Town Council after being submerged in Butiaba Town Council.

The Albertine Police spokesperson, Allan Hakiza confirmed the incident, stating that some structures were destroyed and adding that, as they continue to use the remaining structures, they have plans to relocate the office.

‘’Some structures were destroyed by water but we are continuing to use the remaining structures as we plan to relocate the office to a safer place.’’

Meanwhile, Angomoko and Jackson Dadda, all victims and residents of Butiaba, say they are stranded since they have been left homeless, and they are asking for support from the government.

‘’We have nowhere to sleep, our house has been swept away by flooding water and we have nothing we eat, we are appealing for government’s intervention and support.’’

Sam Ayesiga, another resident, expressed his fear over the continuous floods that have left them homeless and in losses in just a period of one and a half years where they were hit by floods and COVID-19.

Moses Awera, the Mayor of Butiaba Town Council, appealed for government support, saying people have been left homeless. ‘’If the government helped those from Kiteezi, Bududa, and Karamoja, why not the locals from Butiaba town council, our people are suffering,’’ he decried.

Awera requests the government come to their rescue, saying the majority of people are stranded with no homes and lacking what to survive on.

In 2020, over 3,500 people were displaced by floods in the area due to rising water levels in Lake Albert. The government promised support and plans to resettle the affected residents, but since then, nothing has been done.
