Museveni orders installation of electric fence along Kidepo border

Kitgum: Uganda’s president, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has directed the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities to consider constructing an electric fence along Kidepo Valley National Park.
In a letter dated May 29, 2024, addressed to Hon. Tom Butime, President Museveni stated that while in Kitgum district for the Thanksgiving Ceremony of Hon. Aber Lillian, the Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees (OPM), the district leadership informed him of the destruction of people’s gardens caused by elephants and other wild animals from Kidepo National Park, which has affected the population surrounding the park.
He directed that the Ministry plan for the construction of an electric fence along the boundary of Kidepo Valley National Park, prioritizing this in the 2025–26 financial year.
President Museveni also directed the desilting of water points and the digging of new water points, as some of these animals leave the park in search of water.
Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian, Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees (OPM), stated that it is high time the problem of elephant invasions in the sub-counties of Orom, Kiteny, Orom East, Namokora, Namokora North, Namokora Town Council, Omiya Anyima, and parts of Mucwini is permanently resolved.
