Kitgum: A suspected motorcycle thief identified as Amenyi Ambrose, aged 28, a resident of Ngayi Village, Akucha Parish, Ngayi Subcounty in Oyam District, was killed by a mob in Kitgum Municipality on Friday, April 11, 2025.
His alleged accomplice, only identified as Opio, narrowly escaped the mob and is currently on the run.
According to IP Oloya Joe, the Public Relations Officer of the Aswa East Regional Police, the incident occurred in the morning hours of Thursday, April 10.
Amenyi Ambrose and Opio are said to have gone to Quarters East Cell, Guu Ward, Pandwong Division, where they allegedly stole a motorcycle, registration number UFD 506T, belonging to Mr. Canwat Richard, 28, a boda boda rider and resident of Quarters East Ward B Cell.
The motorcycle had been parked outside Mr. Canwat’s residence while he briefly stepped indoors. He heard the engine start and quickly realized the motorcycle was being stolen.
He raised an alarm, alerting neighbors and prompting a search for the suspects. Mr. Canwat also reported the theft to the police.
Around midday, one of the suspects Amenyi Ambrose was intercepted by residents in Auch Cell, still within Pandwong Ward, and beaten by a mob. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The stolen motorcycle was recovered at the scene and is now in police custody as part of the investigation.
A police team from Kitgum Central Police Station, led by AIP Ongom John Bosco, visited the scene to document the incident. The body of the deceased was transported to Kitgum General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the accomplice, Opio, and have urged the public not to take the law into their own hands but to report criminal activities to the authorities.
