Mob kills suspected thieves in Arua

Authorities suspect Fred’s father fled upon learning of his son's death, fearing mob retaliation.

Arua: Police in Ayivu East Division, Arua City, have launched an investigation into the mob killings of two men, Kenerd Fred (late 20s) and Afiyo (early 20s), both Lugbara tribesmen from Mvara in Oluko.

The murders, which occurred on March 21, 2025, were reported by Mr. Agotre Ben, chairman of Oduluba Ward.

According to police, the victims were suspected thieves who were chased by an angry mob at around 11 a.m. after allegedly stealing goods.

Kenerd Fred was found severely beaten and incapacitated before his body was dumped at his father’s home in Oluko.

West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Collins Asea, confirmed that detectives and a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) from Ayivu East Division, along with town agent Jasan Julius, visited the crime scene.

“Fred’s body was found under a tree, covered with a bedsheet, showing multiple wounds. Broken sticks were scattered around, and suspected stolen items, including eating utensils and foodstuffs such as posho, onions, and tomatoes, were recovered,” Asea said.

Shortly afterward, Dadamu police post reported the discovery of another body, identified as Afiyo, who was also killed by mob action and left by the roadside. Similar exhibits, including broken sticks and suspected stolen shop foodstuffs, were found at the scene.

Both bodies were retrieved for postmortem examinations. Preliminary findings suggest the deceased were known for theft in the community.

Authorities suspect Fred’s father fled upon learning of his son’s death, fearing mob retaliation.

Police have urged the public to refrain from mob justice and respect legal processes. Investigations are ongoing to identify those involved in the killings.
