Kampala: The Ugandan government, through the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and security agencies, has issued a stern warning to media operators against the misuse of their platforms for hate speech, misinformation, incitement of violence, and sectarianism.

This warning was delivered during a high-level meeting recently, bringing together media house CEOs, UCC officials, government representatives, and security agencies.

The meeting was hosted by UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo and attended by Minister Dr. Balaam Barugahara Atenyi, representing the Special Presidential Advisor on Special Operations.

Among the notable attendees were; Kin Kariisa (Next Media), Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye (Director of Defence Public Information), Barbra Kaijja (Vision Group), Irene Atek (Mega FM), Wodmal David (Rupiny FM) and John Paul Kiffasi (Mighty Fire FM).

Hon. Nyombi Thembo expressed concern over the increasing misuse of media platforms, warning that: “Hate speech, incitement of violence, and sectarianism are tarnishing Uganda’s image and pose a significant threat to national security.”

Dr. Balaam Barugahara Atenyi emphasized the need to balance media freedom with national security concerns, urging media operators to uphold ethical standards, accuracy, and compliance with the law.

‘’Media operators and editors must take proactive steps to mitigate harmful content, patriotism, unity, and tolerance should be promoted in all media content,’’ he said, adding that mMedia owners, CEOs, and key personnel are encouraged to undergo a cadre course at the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi (NALI) by June 30, 2026.

Barugahara reaffirmed government’s commitment to upholding media freedom while ensuring that media platforms are not misused to destabilize the country.
