Mbale Zoo and Wildlife Conservation Education Centre Nears Completion

Additionally, tourist facilities are being developed, including restaurants, gift shops, and viewing platforms to enhance visitor experiences.

Mbale: The Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) team from Entebbe has inspected the ongoing construction of the Mbale Zoo and Wildlife Conservation Education Centre, confirming that the facility is set to open in early 2025.

Valued at 20 billion shillings, the project aims to enhance wildlife conservation, education, and tourism in the region.

During a recent site visit, UWEC officials, including Chief Warden Mr. David Musingo and Site Supervisor Mr. Oyett, expressed satisfaction with the construction progress and reaffirmed their commitment to the project.

Current construction includes state-of-the-art enclosures for various animal species, such as lions, leopards, elephants, and monkeys.

The conservation education centre will feature interactive exhibits, auditoriums, and laboratories for educational programs, while a fully-equipped wildlife hospital will provide treatment and rehabilitation for animals.

Additionally, tourist facilities are being developed, including restaurants, gift shops, and viewing platforms to enhance visitor experiences.

The project is being implemented in phases: phase one, which is 80% complete, encompasses the animal enclosures, education centre, and wildlife hospital; phase two, currently at 20% completion, focuses on tourist facilities, staff quarters, and landscaping.

UWEC’s vision is to promote conservation by educating the public about Uganda’s wildlife, supporting research collaborations, and engaging local communities in sustainable livelihoods.

The Mbale Zoo and Conservation Education Centre is expected to create over 100 jobs, stimulate local economic growth, and boost tourism by attracting visitors, thereby generating revenue for local businesses and the national economy.

Despite facing challenges such as funding constraints and delays, UWEC is committed to completing the project. The centre’s opening is anticipated to position Uganda as a premier wildlife destination, inspire a new generation of conservationists, and empower local communities through sustainable practices.
