Masindi woman who burnt child over food sentenced to prison

She pleaded guilty to them and requested forgiveness from court claiming she was ignorant about the offence she committed.

Masindi: Court has sentenced Angelina Ongyera to three years imprisonment for burning her grandchild in Chongoyoma village, Pakanyi Sub County, Masindi district.

Ongyera, 62-year old was arrested last week for beating and burning the hands of the 4-year old boy for allegedly eating food meant for super and she was taken to Masindi police station where she was charged with aggravated child torture.

She appeared before Masindi chief magistrate Kosia Kasibayo on Wednesday to answer the charges.

She pleaded guilty to them and requested forgiveness from court claiming she was ignorant about the offence she committed.

She also asked court to give her a light sentence since she had other four grandchildren she is looking after.

However, Geoffrey Mutebi, the Resident State Attorney rejected Ongyera’s request saying her action as grandmother is aggravated and must be punished  with a heavy  sentence to deter others from committing a similar offence.

Mutebi noted that as a grandmother, Ongyera was expected to give proper care to the boy instead of torturing him.

In response, His Worship Kasibayo concurred with Mutebi saying Ongyera’s action on the boy was criminal in nature and attracts life imprisonment.

He added that cases of child torture are on the raise in Bunyoro region and that court has to take serious action against the culprits to fight the crime.

He, however, noted that Ongyera had saved the court’s time and resources by pleading guilty to the charges. He also considered her advanced age and being a first time offender and sentenced her to three years imprisonment in Masindi government prison so that she can reform.
