Masindi woman dies while giving birth in church

The bodies of the mother and the baby were still lying at the Masindi hospital mortuary at the time of filing this story.

Masindi: A woman has reportedly died at a church while giving birth in Karangwe village, Kimengo Sub County, Masindi district.

The deceased has been identified as Joy Katusabe, 35 years old, who reportedly died at Karangwe Miracle Church of God on Monday afternoon, where she had been taken after developing labor pain.

The officer in charge of the Kimengo police post told this publication that Katusabe was taken to the church by her relatives for prayers after developing complications during childbirth but unfortunately died there.

But Katusabe’s family has dismissed the allegations as false and malicious.

Matia Bulemu, the deceased’s elder brother, said that Katusabe returned home from her husband on Saturday when pregnant, and while he was away, she developed labor pain, and he was called to go and take him to the health facility.

He added that by the time he reached home, Katusabe had already died with her baby in the womb, and they later got a doctor who removed the baby from the mother’s womb.

However, Matia stresses that they were shocked when police stormed their home and told them that the deceased had died at the church, which he termed a fabrication by self-seekers.

However, the Masindi resident district commissioner, Emmy Ngabirano, has confirmed to this publication that Katusabe died from the church, contrary to the family members claims.

‘’The death of Katusabe was unfortunate, and I pray that it should not happen again. My prayer and directive are that pregnant mothers or patients should first seek medical treatment, then spiritual guidance and healing can follow later.’’

Ngabirano said in the meantime, the church has been temporarily closed since it’s still the scene of crime, regretted the incident, and asked patients to always first seek medical treatment.

‘’It was unfortunate to lose the baby, and the mother sought spiritual healing instead of medical care.’’

The bodies of the mother and the baby were still lying at the Masindi hospital mortuary at the time of filing this story.

The management of Karangwe Miracle Church of God could not be reached for a comment on the matter at the time of filing this story.
