Masindi woman dies in accident while going for burial

Namatovu died on the spot, while Sunday was rushed to Masindi Hospital in critical condition.

Masindi: A woman has tragically lost her life, and her husband is critically injured following a fatal accident along the Masindi-Hoima road at Murro Kabega village in Bwijanga Sub County. The accident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Sulain Namatovu, a resident of Kimanya Village, Kasongoire Parish in Budongo Sub County. Her husband, Solomon Sunday, who was riding with her, was knocked from behind by another rider. The suspect involved in the collision is currently on the run, and the authorities are searching for them.

James Mudede, the LC3 Chairman for Bwijanga Sub County, confirmed that the accident occurred as the couple was traveling towards Rwamakere village for a burial.

Namatovu died on the spot, while Sunday was rushed to Masindi Hospital in critical condition. The lifeless body of Namatovu was also transported to Masindi Hospital Mortuary.

Mudede expressed his concern about road safety, urging motorcycle riders to exercise caution, particularly during the festive season when traffic is expected to increase.

By the time of publication, police had not issued a statement regarding the incident.

This incident marks the second tragic accident along the same stretch of road in just 10 days. The first accident, which occurred recently, claimed the life of one person and left two others critically injured after their motorcycle collided with a sugarcane truck.

The recent tragedy adds to a growing list of fatal accidents in Masindi district this year. On October 26, two separate accidents resulted in two fatalities and left ten others injured. In the first incident, two teenage boys were killed when they were struck and dragged by a speeding lorry on the Masindi-Biiso road. Later that day, another accident occurred involving a vehicle traveling from Kampala to Masindi, which crashed into a tree, injuring ten occupants.

On October 18, a 10-year-old girl, Fwocparowth Nelifer, tragically lost her life while crossing the Masindi–Paraa road. She was struck by a Toyota Hilux traveling from Pakwach to Kampala. Investigations suggested reckless driving as the cause of the accident.

Earlier in the year, accidents in June and July also contributed to the district’s alarming road safety record. In June, a collision between a Fuso tanker and a Bajaj motorcycle resulted in two fatalities and seven serious injuries. In July, LC1 Chairperson James Ozele from Alimugonza Central Village lost his life after being struck by a speeding tipper lorry on the Masindi-Biiso Road.
