Masindi woman burns grandson for eating food for supper

Masindi: Police in Masindi district have arrested 62-year-old Ajelinda Ongera for allegedly burning her 4-year-old grandson, Opakrwoth Kennedy, with fire.
According to reports, the grandmother accused the child of eating food meant for supper, leading to severe physical punishment.
The following morning, she allegedly forced his hands into a fire, resulting in serious burns on both of his hands.
Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of Ajelinda, noting that she is currently being detained at Masindi Central Police Station.
Investigations into the case began after it was reported to Masindi Central Police on March 31, 2025.
The child, Opakrwoth Kennedy, was rescued by his aunt, Nyirach Maureen, who took him to the women’s councilor of Chongoyoma village. The matter was then reported to the Masindi Police Station for further action.

He called upon the authorities to provide loving care and protection to children, reminding the public that child torture is a serious crime punishable under Ugandan law.
