He confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspects at Masindi police station awaiting to be arraigned in court to answer charges of murder.

Masindi: Police in Masindi district are holding two suspects on allegations of gang- raping, killing and dumping a 16-year-old girl in River Kafu.

The suspects; Rogers Amanya and another only identified as Dickson, were arrested on Wednesday last week after Costa Bakanya was allegedly gang -raped, killed and her body dumped in the River on Monday last week.

The duo is currently detained at Masindi Central Police Station. The deceased was a resident of Kibangya Village, Kimengo Sub County who had just completed her Primary Leaving Examinations at Kaeyeera Parents Primary School.

Upon interrogation, the duo reportedly confessed to killing Bakanya and dumping her body in the River Kafu that swept it into River Nile where it was recovered by the fishermen in Kikaito Village in Kiryandongo district on Sunday and identified by relatives.

Steven Kamuhanda, the deceased’s maternal uncle says the deceased went missing when she had gone to graze cattle on November 11, 2024 prompting them to mount a hunt for her, in vain.

Kamuhanda adds that they later realized that their daughter had been gang raped, strangled to death and the body dumped in the River which forced them to report the matter to the police that arrested the suspects.

Richard Mukombizi, another relative of the deceased appeals to the authorities to handle the matter the right way such that their daughter can get justice for what happened to her.

Mugisa Vincent, the LCI chairman of Kibangya village, strongly condemned the incident, highlighting a recurring issue of employers failing to register their workers with local authorities. He pointed out that this lack of registration hinders the community’s ability to monitor and address potential security threats.

“For instance, those who killed this young girl were not reported to the LC1 office. This is a major challenge we have in our area,” he emphasized. Mugisa called on employers to adhere to local regulations by registering workers with the area chairpersons to enhance accountability and community safety.

While addressing the community members of Kikaito village on Sunday, Simon Peter Ochitti, the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in Masindi district commended the community members for the cooperation and vigilance that led to the arrest of the suspects.

Ochitti condemned the acts of violence and advised the community members to always explore peaceful and lawful means of resolving grievances instead of violence.

The police officer confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspects at Masindi police station awaiting to be arraigned in court to answer charges of murder.
