Masindi School closed after collapsing wall kills a teacher
He therefore warned the school proprietors against operating in dilapidated structures and without licenses.
Masindi: Authorities in Masindi district on Thursday August 1, 2024 temporarily closed Arise and Prosper Nursery and Primary School in Kyangamwoyo Village, Kijunjubwa, Sub-County Masindi district where a collapsing wall killed a teacher and injured six pupils.
The incident occurred during Wednesday’s heavy downpour that was characterized by heavy wind. The deceased has been identified as Bridget Alianitwe, in her early 30’s and a resident of Marongo cell in Buliima Town Council, Masindi district.
Information obtained from the school administrators indicate that the incident happened when Alinaitwe had gone to drive out the learners from a dilapidated semi-permanent structure where they were playing.
Moses Nayebale, the school director, told the authorities led by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner Sanon Dhaala that the structure was being used as a store where learners were parking their bicycles and keeping their food.
Monica Kiiza, the acting District Education Officer (DEO), said that they decided to temporarily close the school after noticing the gaps that need to be fixed before they reopen it including improving on the floor, completing the registration process and obtaining a license and recruiting more teachers among other requirements.
Kiiza noted that last year they wrote to all private school proprietors to ensure that their schools are registered and licensed which the majority have done while a few are yet to comply.
Sanon Dhaala, the Deputy RDC says investigations into the incident have commenced adding that he has instructed the district engineer and the District Education Officer to do an assessment which will guide the final decision that will be taken by the authorities on the matter.
Dhaala therefore warned the school proprietors against operating in dilapidated structures and without licenses.
Enoch Akandwanaho, the district councillor representing Kijunjubwa Sub County appealed to the district authorities to be lenient when determining the fate of the school by making a decision that will favor the community since they don’t have any other school in the area.
Arnold Atugonza, the administrator of Masindi Kitara Kijunjubwa medical center told the team they received seven victims at the facility, admitted two, referred four children to Masindi hospital, and a female teacher passed away shortly after reaching the medical center.
