Masindi pupils escape unhurt as the wind blows off classroom roof
Out of 431 pupils at Kayeera Primary School, only 92 reported to school on Thursday following Wednesday’s disaster.
Masindi: Lessons were interrupted at Kayeera Primary School in Kimengo, Sub-County Masindi district, after a strong wind blew off the roof.
Saleh Katwesige, the school head teacher, told this publication on Thursday evening that the incident happened at around 5 p.m. when all learners were in class for lessons.
She explained that rain accompanied by strong winds blew off the classroom roof on Wednesday, March 26th, 2024, affecting P5 and P6 classes, girls toilets, and electric wires.
‘’The incident happened when learners were in class attending lessons; however, no child was hurt, but the electric wires, timbers, and ironsheets were blown off,’’ Katwesige added.
The school head teacher said that as a result, they registered a low turnout of learners on Thursday, March 27, 2024, due to the disaster. She therefore appealed for the government’s intervention.
Monica Kiiza, the district education officer (DEO), said the district engineer has already assessed the damaged structure and will report it to the district, which will work on it.
‘’We are going to get funds and work on the affected structure as soon as possible because it’s an emergency. We thank God that no child was hurt.’’
Kassim Kabagonza, the Masindi district LCV Vice Chairman, said that the school had plans to be rehabilitated. He, however, noted that they would first work on the emergency.
