Masindi NUP’s Women’s Day Commemoration in limbo over police clearance

The NUP leadership in Masindi remains hopeful that the event will proceed once police clearance is granted.

Masindi: The National Unity Platform (NUP) Masindi Chapter’s planned International Women’s Day celebrations remain uncertain as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has yet to respond to their request in accordance with Section 5 of the Public Order Management Act.

While International Women’s Day is globally commemorated on March 8, NUP Masindi had planned to hold their event on Monday, March 10, 2025, in Kabango Town Council.

On February 25, NUP General Secretary, David Lewis, wrote to IGP Abbas Byakagaba, notifying him about the event. The celebration was set to run from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and was expected to be presided over by NUP Party President Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine.

According to the letter seen by this publication, the event’s itinerary included; health camp, community service in Kabango, economic exhibitions for women and opening of NUP’s Masindi office.

Wycliffe Rogers Kasaija, the Masindi NUP Chairperson, expressed frustration over the delayed police response, stating that they had organized for a large turnout of about 5,000 women.

“We had planned several activities, including blood donation, distribution of mama kits, pads, counseling, and exhibitions. The delay has greatly affected our plans,” Kasaija told the press at their party office in Nyangahya Cell on Friday.

Simon Ajuna, NUP’s Registrar for Masindi, confirmed that the event has been postponed indefinitely due to the lack of police clearance.

“A new date will be communicated, hopefully before the end of this month,” Ajuna stated.

Meanwhile, Masindi NUP General Secretary, Job Alinaitwe, reiterated their commitment to supporting women and girls in the district.

“We had prepared essential donations such as mama kits and sanitary pads, as many women and girls cannot afford them. We remain committed to this cause,” he emphasized.

The NUP leadership in Masindi remains hopeful that the event will proceed once police clearance is granted.
