Masindi Municipal councillors moot plans to impeach Mayor

He has requested permission to draft a motion for impeachment.

Masindi: The Masindi Municipal Council is currently grappling with potential impeachment proceedings against Mayor Ronald Busiinge Kyomuhendo.

The move comes after ongoing concerns raised by councilors regarding the mayor’s failure to enforce resolutions passed by the council. During a full council meeting on November 15, 2024, councilor Isingoma Peter Ndabi from Kikwanana ward highlighted multiple instances where the mayor and his executive committee had not ensured the implementation of key resolutions. Among the unresolved matters was the eviction of James Ventures from municipal property.

Ndabi criticized the mayor’s decision to involve the Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, in seeking intervention over idle council land instead of implementing the council’s resolutions.

He argued that this action indicated a lack of leadership and follow-through by the mayor’s office. As a result, Ndabi has requested permission to draft a motion for impeachment, which was supported by fellow councilor Robert Akugizibwe from Kijura.

Allegations have surfaced that the mayor invited Minister Magyezi to Masindi without the council’s approval to inspect municipal plots, fueling suspicions of improper land dealings.

Councilor Richard Alinaitwe from Civic Ward Upper added to the critique, emphasizing that the mayor’s actions lacked transparency and disregarded the authority of the council.

In response to these accusations, Mayor Kyomuhendo dismissed the impeachment threats, describing himself as “unimpeachable.”

He defended his actions, explaining that Minister Magyezi’s visit was part of a broader program aimed at promoting mindset change for PDM (Parish Development Model) beneficiaries and securing government funding for infrastructure improvements in Masindi.

The situation remains tense, with the councilors demanding accountability and the mayor standing firm on his record. The next steps will depend on whether the proposed motion for impeachment gains traction within the council.
