Masindi leadership pursues compensation for baby killed by chimpanzees

The family reported the matter to the Masindi police station, which dispatched a doctor to the family and conducted a postmortem on the body.

Masindi: The leadership of Nyantonzi Sub County in Masindi district has started pursuing compensation for the baby who was killed by chimpanzees in Katuugo 2 village.

The two-month-old Fatuma Ayikoru was killed in the Budongo Forest Reserve, where its mother had gone to collect firewood on Saturday.

Sunday Eyotu, the subcounty chairperson, told this publication that they are helping the dead baby’s family fulfill the procedures for getting compensation from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the government agency responsible for the wildlife in the country.

Eyotu added that the family reported the matter to the Masindi police station, which dispatched a doctor to the family and conducted a postmortem on the body.

He added that the family was supposed to go to Masindi police station to record statements and the burial expenditures that are supposed to be included in the police report that will be submitted to the UWA and the National Forestry Authority (NFA) to claim compensation.

Eyotu further added that they are also in touch with Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the NFA on the matter.

Bashir Hangi, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Spokesperson, who condoled with the bereaved family for the loss of its member, revealed that UWA would assess and investigate the incident, and if it was found that it happened outside the protected areas, the family would be compensated.
