Masindi-Kitara Diocese establishes coffee demonstration farm

He emphasized that this is a pilot project, with plans to expand it to other districts in Bunyoro.

Masindi: Masindi-Kitara Diocese has established a coffee demonstration farm at Walyooba Parish in Masindi district, as part of an initiative to support farmers in the region.

Daniel Otim, the Diocese’s planning development officer, announced during an interface meeting that four acres of land have already been prepared, with plans to introduce coffee seedlings soon.

The project follows a series of discussions with Hajji Sadik Musa Lukandwa, head of mobilization in the office of the president and coordinator of Uplift Interfaith.

Otim shared that manure has been applied to the land in preparation for the seedlings, and suggested the expansion of similar coffee model farms in other parishes such as Kiryandongo and Ikoba.

Bishop Rt. Rev. George William Kasangaki emphasized that farmers need more than just seedlings; they require ongoing support in the form of expertise, guidance, and agricultural advice.

He stressed that while the government has made significant investments in agricultural projects, there is a need for continued follow-up and support through agricultural extension workers.

Bishop Kasangaki also called for the establishment of coffee processing facilities at the regional level to add value to the coffee produced, as farmers currently face low earnings by selling raw coffee.

Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza, the Diocesan Secretary, highlighted that the project’s aim is to improve household incomes, providing a solid financial foundation for the Diocese.

Hajji Lukandwa, the mobilization head, noted that the proposal for a coffee processing facility in Bunyoro would be submitted to the president for consideration.

He emphasized that this is a pilot project, with plans to expand it to other districts in Bunyoro and encouraged involvement from different religious groups, including Catholics, Muslims, and Seventh-day Adventists.

The coffee demonstration farm will be officially launched on April 9, with Second Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga set to officiate the event.
