Masindi, Kiryandongo to benefit from bulky water supply for multipurpose use project

He expressed optimism that the project will enable farmers to improve both their production and livelihoods.

Masindi: Masindi and Kiryandongo districts are set to benefit from a multibillion-shilling project aimed at promoting agricultural production and restoring the environment.

The “Bulky Water Supply for Multipurpose Use Project” will be implemented in Masindi Port and Kigumba sub-counties in Kiryandongo District, as well as Miirya and Kimengo sub-counties in Masindi District. The project is being funded by the African Development Bank.

Speaking during the project feasibility study with Masindi district leaders at the district chambers on Wednesday, Eng. Ronald Kato Kayizi, the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Water for Production Department in the Ministry of Water and Environment, revealed that the project will pump water from the river in Masindi Port for both domestic and irrigation use, benefiting both smallholder and large-scale farmers in the four sub-counties.

Eng. Kayizi added that the project will also focus on restoring degraded wetlands and hilltops, as well as establishing a center of excellence for youth and women in the project area.

He appealed to residents in the project area to embrace the initiative by applying for access to the water to ensure they maximize the value of the investment made by the government and funders.

Closing the meeting, Kasim Kabagonza, the Masindi District Vice Chairperson, applauded the government for considering the district, stating that the project is timely, given the challenges farmers face due to climate change.

Kabagonza expressed optimism that the project will enable farmers to improve both their production and livelihoods.

Bright Mugume, the Chairperson of Kimengo Sub-county, welcomed the project, expressing confidence that it will solve the challenges of water scarcity and increase access to safe water in his area.
