Masindi Hospital boosted with medical equipment

She pledged that the district will ensure proper use and protection of the donated equipment and the water facilities once installed.

Masindi: Masindi General Hospital has received a major boost after the Rotary Club of Bweyogerere Namboole, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Masindi, donated medical equipment worth USD 32,800 (about Shs147.2 million) to improve health service delivery at the facility.

The equipment was handed over to the hospital administration during an event held at the hospital premises this evening. During the same event, the Rotarians also launched a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project worth USD 64,000 (about Shs294.4 million) aimed at addressing persistent water challenges at the hospital.

Among the equipment donated are C-section instruments, a steriliser machine, surgical lights, an oxygen concentrator, an instrument cupboard, a theatre operating table, weighing scales, and three delivery beds with mattresses, among other items.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Peace Flavia Lukabya, the President of the Rotary Club of Bweyogerere Namboole, said the donation fulfils a pledge the club made to support improved health services at the facility.

She noted that saving lives requires health workers to have the right tools, adding that providing the equipment will empower medical staff to work more effectively and ensure mothers deliver safely.

Geofrey Martin Kitakule, the District Governor of Rotary in Uganda, applauded the Rotarians for identifying the need for the medical equipment, noting that the support will save many lives and make a significant impact in the area.

He explained that the equipment worth USD 32,800 was secured through a grant from Rotary International.

Brenda Mugisa, the President of the Rotary Club of Masindi, said that under the WASH project, the club will install a solar-powered water system to address the hospital’s water shortage.

According to Mugisa, the project will include the installation of six 10,000-litre water tanks at different wards and rehabilitation of existing water facilities at the hospital.

Dr. Rogers Musinguzi, the Acting Executive Consultant at Masindi General Hospital, said the facility handles about 420 deliveries every month, with over 120 mothers undergoing Caesarean sections despite having limited equipment such as few delivery beds and only one operating table.

He said the donation will significantly improve service delivery at the hospital and appreciated the Rotary Club of Bweyogerere Namboole for supporting the facility.

Musinguzi added that the WASH project, including the installation of a solar-powered water system, will improve hospital operations and reduce expenditure on water, which is essential for the hospital’s daily activities.

Jane Akiror, the Masindi Deputy Chief Administrative Officer also applauded the Rotary Club of Bweyogerere Namboole for both the medical equipment donation and the WASH project, noting that the hospital had been facing major challenges.

She pledged that the district will ensure proper use and protection of the donated equipment and the water facilities once installed. Akiror further urged health workers to utilise the equipment responsibly to improve services at the hospital, which serves patients from several neighbouring districts.
