Masindi EC ready for Mayor elections as voter turnout declines
He stressed that local leaders, including mayors, play a critical role in service delivery, and urged the electorate to vote wisely for leaders who will represent their interests.

Masindi: The Electoral Commission (EC) in Masindi District has confirmed readiness to conduct the elections for mayors and their councillors scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Speaking to our reporter this evening, Abubakr Lubwama, the Assistant Returning Officer for Masindi District, expressed concern over the declining voter turnout in recent elections.
Lubwama noted that voter participation has steadily reduced since the presidential and parliamentary elections, where only 49 percent of registered voters cast their ballots.
He added that turnout further dropped during the recently concluded Local Council Five (LCV) chairperson and councillor elections, with only 26 percent of the electorate participating a trend he described as worrying.
He called upon eligible voters to actively take part in the remaining elections, including those for mayors and their councillors, as well as Local Council Three chairpersons and their councillors.
Lubwama explained that now that elections for the presidential, parliamentary, and district local council leaders have been concluded, voters should turn up in large numbers to elect their leaders tomorrow and on February 4, 2026, when Local Council Three elections will be held.
He further confirmed that all election materials have already been received and that EC staff are fully prepared to conduct the exercise.
Lubwama appealed to voters to come out in big numbers, noting that polling will begin at 7:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. However, he emphasized that voters who are still in line by 4:00 p.m. will be allowed to cast their votes.
He stressed that local leaders, including mayors, play a critical role in service delivery, and urged the electorate to vote wisely for leaders who will represent their interests.
Lubwama also raised concern over voters who picked voter slips but failed to participate in the elections, saying this negatively affects the election of capable and committed leaders.
