Masindi authorities rehabilitate tarmac roads with murrum

He also urged road users to exercise caution while driving or riding in the town during the ongoing rehabilitation works to prevent accidents.

Masindi: Authorities in Masindi Municipality have turned to using murrum to rehabilitate tarmac roads within the town.

This decision has sparked concerns among residents and business owners, who are raising issues about the dust caused by the murrum, which they say is affecting the quality of their products and posing health risks.

Nakitede Sulaina, a clothing business operator, expressed frustration, stating that customers are hesitant to buy products due to the dust. She explained that the dust is giving her business a bad reputation.

Patrick Kwesiga, a boda boda rider operating at the Kijunjubwa stage, also voiced concerns about the health risks posed by the dust.

He mentioned that the dust puts them at risk of respiratory issues like coughs and the flu. Moreover, some of their clients are avoiding them because of the unhygienic conditions the dust creates in the town.

Denis Tugume, a local shopkeeper, also noted that the dust has led to fewer customers visiting his shop compared to previous months. He urged the municipal authorities to replace the murrum with proper tarmac, explaining that the murrum fills potholes temporarily, but doesn’t last long before they resurface.

In response to these concerns, Ronald Kyomuhendo Businge, the Municipal Mayor, assured the public that the use of murrum is only a temporary measure. He explained that plans are in place to rehabilitate the roads with tarmac within two weeks, providing a permanent solution to the potholes and the dust problem.

“The murrum we have put is temporary, and we have plans to rehabilitate the roads with tarmac. This will be done within two weeks. The dust in town is temporary as we work to fix the potholes,” Businge said.

He also urged road users to exercise caution while driving or riding in the town during the ongoing rehabilitation works to prevent accidents.
