Kyabazinga unveiled as national UN Goodwill Ambassador to end teenage pregnancy

The Kyabazinga also called for personal development initiatives to complement the efforts, expressing gratitude to the United Nations and its partners for their commitment to uplifting the Busoga Subregion.

Jinja: The Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV, was officially unveiled on Friday, December 13, 2024, as the National UN Goodwill Ambassador to combat teenage pregnancy in Busoga Subregion and Uganda. The event took place at Igenge Palace in Bugembe, Jinja District.

The appointment comes amid persistent concerns about teenage pregnancy, which has remained stagnant over the past two decades. Statistics show that 1 in 4 girls aged 15-19 in Uganda is either pregnant or has given birth. In the Busoga Subregion alone, over 130,530 girls aged 10-19 became pregnant in the past three years, with Kamuli and Mayuge districts recording the highest numbers.

Sarah Nakku, Community Mobilization and Networking Advisor with UNAIDS, noted that many young girls in Busoga are impregnated by their peers. In response, UNAIDS, in partnership with USAID, UNFPA, the Uganda AIDS Commission, cultural institutions, and other development partners, launched a campaign dubbed “Omusadha ne Mpango” (The Man is the Pillar). This initiative aims to significantly reduce teenage pregnancy rates over the next five years.

In his acceptance speech, the Kyabazinga pledged to lead the campaign and lauded UNAIDS for its timely intervention.

He emphasized the importance of a healthy population for development, aligning with the kingdom’s goals to reduce HIV rates and address other communicable diseases in the region.

The Kyabazinga also called for personal development initiatives to complement the efforts, expressing gratitude to the United Nations and its partners for their commitment to uplifting the Busoga Subregion.
