Kitgum traders road accident death toll rises to two

Other victims remain unidentified as medical teams work to provide urgent care.

Kitgum: The death toll from the Kitgum Owino Traders road accident has risen to two, following the tragic incident that occurred on the morning of Friday, February 21, 2025.

The accident took place along the Kitgum Municipality to Tumangu Market Day route in Akwang Subcounty, Kitgum District.

According to Olara Samuel, the Transport Officer of the Kitgum Owino Traders Association, another fatality was recorded on Friday night when Odongkara Johnson, a resident of Ocettoke in Labongo Layamo Subcounty, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Earlier, Quinto Olweny, the Association’s chairperson, reported that several individuals sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Kitgum Government Hospital.

Among the deceased is Akech Poline, a 43-year-old female vendor from Westland in Central Division, Kitgum Municipality. She was known for selling salt and other merchandise.

According to IP Oloya Joe, the Aswa East Regional Police PRO, the vehicle involved in the accident was an Isuzu Forward white truck (registration number UBG 736W), driven by Kibwota Isaac, a 43-year-old resident of Labuje.

The truck, carrying Owino traders, overturned at Alune Village, Akwang Subcounty, Kitgum District.

Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving may have caused the accident. The vehicle allegedly lost control before overturning, leading to multiple casualties.

The police traffic unit visited the accident scene, and the truck was towed to Kitgum Central Police Station for further inspection as investigations continue.
