Kitgum school boosts practical lessons with demonstration gardens

Kitgum: The management of Global View Preparatory School in Pager division, Kitgum Municipality has initiated school gardening for its pupils in a bid to embrace practical learning.

According to Ms. Namalike Lucy Onekalit, the school Co-Director, demonstration gardens have been established for each class, with students planting and caring for specific crops until harvest.

For example, the primary seven class has planted cabbage, while the primary six students are engaged in tomato planting.

She added that this initiative aims to promote practical learning and produce citizens who can exhibit the practical skills they have learned.

The Project Lead, Mr. Okumu Kennedy, highlighted that the candidate class has chosen sack gardening to utilize limited land space. Seventy-nine learners have planted 79 cabbage sacks using gathered soil.

He affirmed that they have chosen the Agloria F1 cabbage variety, along with okra, sweet potatoes, and eggplants.

Lamara Fionah, a primary seven candidate, expressed her enthusiasm for cabbage growing. She plans to practice it during vacation, teach her family the skills she has attained, and raise seedlings for sale.

This year, Global View Preparatory School has chosen the academic theme: “Cultivating Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills.”
