Kitgum chairman to quit politics

Kitgum: The Kitgum District Vice Chairperson, Hon. Lapyem Emmanuel, also serving as the Labongo Layamo Subcounty Councillor V, has announced his political retirement ahead of the 2026 elections.
Hon. Lapyem Emmanuel made this announcement during the Silver Jubilee celebration of former Kitgum District LCV Chairperson Omona Jackson, held over the weekend at Oryang A South village in Oryang Parish, Amida Subcounty in Kitgum district.
According to Hon. Lapyem, he does not intend to contest in the next polls, stating that he has served in elective positions for the past 15 years and wishes to leave the stage for a new generation of leaders. He emphasized that he will not be on the ballot for any political office in the 2026 elections.
‘’I won’t contest in the next polls because I have served in elective positions for the past 15 years, and I wish to leave the stage for a new generation of leaders; this is my last term,’’ he added.
Komakech Kenneth, a resident of Akworo in Amida Subcounty, Kitgum District, expressed his appreciation for the decision made by the councillor, describing it as the best option.
He further suggested that the district or the government of Uganda should offer Hon. Lapyem Emmanuel a position in public service, particularly within the education department, where his dedication could be best utilized.
Hon. Lapyem Emmanuel has previously served as the District Youth Councillor and Deputy Speaker from 2011 to 2016. He also held the position of District Vice Chairperson during Omona’s tenure and continues to serve in this role in the current Kitgum District local government.
