Kiryandongo residents urged to prioritize road safety as Karuma Bridge reopens
Residents are encouraged to report reckless drivers through official district contacts, as part of a collaborative effort to reduce accidents on this busy highway.
Kiryandongo: Authorities in Kiryandongo District have issued a public safety alert following the reopening of Karuma Bridge, a vital link on the Kampala-Gulu highway connecting Northern Uganda and the West Nile region.
The Officer in Charge of Traffic, ASP Joshua Rwigiza, called on parents, guardians, and all road users to be vigilant, especially around trading centers and schools. He emphasized the need for drivers to observe speed limits, adhere to road signs, and avoid reckless driving.
His warning comes after two recent accidents involving children one of which claimed the life of nine-year-old Oyungurwoth Praise Victoria at Kisunga Trading Center. In another incident, six-year-old Katusabe Gladys sustained serious injuries near Siriba Primary School in Bweyale Town Council.
With the Easter holiday season approaching, ASP Rwigiza also warned against drunk driving and encouraged residents to report drivers who violate traffic rules or ignore checkpoints, speed humps, and signage.
He further expressed concern over sugarcane trucks from Kiryandongo Sugar Ltd., which are often seen speeding despite poor mechanical conditions like faulty lighting. Authorities plan to engage with the company’s management to address these safety issues.
