Kiryandongo DSC boss accused of selling jobs arrested
Desperate to secure the position, Rebecca borrowed the money from a local moneylender and gave it to Kaheru.
Kiryandongo: A member of the Kiryandongo District Service Commission (DSC), Severino Kaheru, is currently in police custody following accusations of extorting money from a job applicant.
Kaheru, who allegedly demanded a bribe of two million Ugandan Shillings, was arrested after the victim reported the matter to authorities.
Rebecca Nalwanga, applied for the position of an enrolled nurse when Kiryandongo District Local Government advertised vacancies earlier this year. After being shortlisted, Rebecca claims she was approached by Severino Kaheru, a member of the DSC, who allegedly asked her for a bribe of two million Shillings, assuring her that the job would be hers if she paid.
Desperate to secure the position, Rebecca borrowed the money from a local moneylender and gave it to Kaheru. However, much to her dismay, she did not get the job. As if that were not enough, the moneylender sold her land after Rebecca was unable to repay the loan, leaving her in a worse financial situation.
In a statement, Rebecca shared her anguish, explaining how she lost both her job opportunity and her land, prompting her to report the matter to the office of the Kiryandongo Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
Upon investigation, Severino Kaheru admitted to taking the money but insisted that Rebecca willingly gave him the funds, believing that he could influence the job offer.
Kaheru also claimed that after the district refused to offer Rebecca the job, he returned 500,000 shillings to her, leaving a balance of 1.5 million Shillings. Kaheru further stated that he would refund the remaining balance by selling his coffee.
Rebecca’s mother, Susan Nakamya, expressed her frustration, saying the family resorted to borrowing money from a lender under the impression that they would be able to pay back the loan. However, with no job offer and no way to repay, the family was forced to sell off their land.
Following Kaheru’s confession, Assistant RDC of Kiryandongo District, Samuel Mbabazi, ordered the arrest of the accused and urged other victims of extortion to report their cases to his office for assistance in recovering their money. He emphasized that any individual involved in corruption at the district would face legal action.
Kiryandongo residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any similar cases of bribery or corruption to the authorities.
