Kiryandongo community launches secondary school
“We have a big problem with early marriages here because parents cannot afford to send their children to distant schools,” she explained.

Kiryandongo: In a bid to bridge the education gap in Mpumwe Parish, Kigumba Sub-county, the community has officially launched Mpumwe Community Secondary School.
The school, located in Kibanda South, Kiryandongo District, is expected to serve more than 200 students who have long faced difficulties accessing secondary education due to the long distances to existing schools.
LC1 Chairperson of Kibyama Village, Mr. Kimeye Joseph, urged residents to prioritize development initiatives.
“It is now time for development, and I believe this school is going to eradicate the levels of uneducation in our community,” he said.
Mr. Kimanywa Francis, Chairperson of the organizing committee, revealed that the school has already registered 50 students. He expressed gratitude to Karubanga Jacob Atenyi for lobbying support toward the establishment of the school.
“We requested Hon. Karubanga to help us, and he has delivered,” he noted.
The landlord, Mr. Situma Frederick, donated two acres of land for the school. “Education is the best investment,” he stated.
Mrs. Bira Zerifa raised concern about the high rate of early marriages in the parish, attributing the problem to limited access to secondary education.
“We have a big problem with early marriages here because parents cannot afford to send their children to distant schools,” she explained.
LC3 Chairperson of Kigumba Sub-county, Ulama Isaac Museveni, assured the community of quality education at the new institution.
“Mpumwe Community Secondary School is going to provide the best education services,” he said.
Hon. Karubanga Jacob Atenyi pledged continued support and promised to represent the community’s priorities in Parliament.
“I have lobbied for this school, and it is now operational. I urge parents to allow girls to stay in school. I am willing to work with everyone who seeks development in the constituency,” he added.
The Kiryandongo District Woman Member of Parliament Elect, Hon. Katusiime Jovia Mbabazi, emphasized the importance of educating all children to foster development in the district.
“We need more leaders, and educating all children in the community will help our district shine in all developmental sectors,” she said, adding that efforts to keep the girl child in school must be prioritized.
Parish Councilor Hon. Watuwa Adam highlighted the transportation challenges students face.
“About 200 students are supposed to attend secondary school, but they have to travel approximately 15 kilometers to the nearest school,” he said.
The community remains optimistic that the new school will bring positive change, reduce early marriages, and improve access to education for children in Mpumwe Parish.
