Kingfisher community hosts youth drawing competition to promote environmental awareness

Murungi was awarded a trophy, an artist's paintbox, and other gifts in recognition of their outstanding talent.

Kikuube: In a bid to inspire environmental awareness and creativity among young people, the Kingfisher community organized a youth drawing competition, attracting students from various schools across Hoima and Kikuube districts.

The event, held at Nguruwe Barracks CNOOC venue in Kyangwali Parish, brought together 30 talented students from 16 schools under the theme: “A Beautiful Balance of Heritage and Modernization.”

The competition aimed to encourage young minds to showcase their artistic skills while promoting environmental protection and sustainable development.

The event was graced by Hon. Mr. Zhang Lizhong, Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, who served as the chief guest.

In his remarks, Mr. Zhang emphasized the importance of the drawing competition in fostering creativity, self-expression, and environmental awareness among young learners.

“Through this competition, students have the opportunity to express their visions for the future, deepen their understanding of environmental protection, and showcase their artistic talents,” he stated.

He further highlighted that the Kingfisher Community Youth Drawing Competition is a testament to the power of art in inspiring positive change and promoting environmental consciousness.

Mr. Zhang acknowledged CNOOC Uganda Limited as one of the largest Chinese investors in Uganda, with investments exceeding $800 million USD and the creation of thousands of local jobs.

Liu Xiangdong, the President of CNOOC Uganda Limited, stated that the art competition plays a vital role in showcasing the environmental beauty of Kingfisher to the rest of the world.

Amina Bukenya, Head of Corporate Affairs at CNOOC Uganda Limited, noted that this was the second edition of the competition.

“These competitions help students learn how to co-exist with nature and appreciate the beauty of the environment,” Bukenya added.

Apronali Murungi, a student from St. James Secondary School, Hoima, emerged as the best artist for the second consecutive edition.

Murungi was awarded a trophy, an artist’s paintbox, and other gifts in recognition of their outstanding talent.
