Kiira, Albertine police regions intensify security for festive season

These measures are aimed at deterring criminal activities while providing reassurance to the public.

Albertine: As the festive season approaches, the Kiira Regional Police command has significantly heightened security measures to ensure public safety across the region.

Under the leadership of Regional Police Commander (RPC) SSP Charles Nsaba and with the support of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) led by Brigadier General Emmanuel Kanyesigye, the police have implemented a comprehensive strategy to prevent crime and maintain order.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson SP James Mubi emphasized that intelligence sharing and collaboration with other security agencies have been crucial in identifying and neutralizing potential security threats, including terrorism, murders, aggravated robberies, arson, sexual offenses, and other disruptive criminal activities.

The police have also increased visibility through day and night joint security patrols in areas with high public activity such as roads, streets, public gatherings, government installations, and music concerts. These measures are aimed at deterring criminal activities while providing reassurance to the public.

Community policing efforts have been expanded, focusing on key sectors such as families, businesses, boda-boda operators, taxi touts, hotels, hospitals, places of worship, and local leaders. The goal is to foster cooperation between the police and the community to prevent crimes and enhance public safety.

Additionally, the reactivation of CCTV cameras across the region is set to bolster surveillance, enabling the police to monitor activities, capture evidence, and prevent dangerous situations.

Increased police presence on major roads, including the Trans-Africa Highway, aims to tackle road accidents and highway robberies. Joint marine patrols have been deployed on Lake Victoria and the Nile River to prevent piracy, drowning, and other water-related crimes.

Private security organizations have been briefed on securing the festive season with an emphasis on access control, timely information sharing, and adherence to human rights. SP Mubi expressed confidence that these measures will ensure a peaceful and secure festive season. The public has been urged to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activity.

Additionally, organizations planning fireworks displays are reminded to obtain written clearance from the Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba.

Meanwhile, in the Albertine region (Bunyoro), police have ramped up operations across several districts to curb theft and other criminal activities during the festive season.

Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Allan Hakiza shared that more than 100 suspects have been arrested during these operations, with some already exonerated and 71 awaiting court hearings.

Operations in Kagadi District have also resulted in the detention of 17 suspects at Kagadi Central Police Station, pending screening and court proceedings.

In Masindi District, the security committee, led by Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Darius Nandinda, has also implemented stricter measures.

The RDC announced that security agencies such as the police, UPDF, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), and the National Forestry Authority (NFA) are working together to address criminal activity.

Two patrol vehicles will be deployed in each sub-county, town council, or division to ensure better coverage. New checkpoints will be set up to restrict livestock movement during night hours from 7 PM to 7 AM, and violators will face arrest.

RDC Nandinda stressed the importance of public vigilance, urging people to ensure the security of their homes and communities during the festive period.

He reminded the public that security starts at home and cooperation with law enforcement is essential to maintaining a peaceful environment.
