Katakwi’s top-performing schools shine despite infrastructure challenges

Despite these challenges, the schools have improvised temporary structures.

Katakwi: In a heartening display of resilience, Priscilla Girls Comprehensive Secondary School and Angodingod Primary School excelled in the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education and Primary Leaving Examinations, with 11 and 28 students achieving first-grade results, respectively.

However, these schools face a daunting challenge: a severe lack of infrastructure.

With a surging student population, Priscilla Girls Comprehensive Secondary School struggles with only two classroom blocks, accommodating over 600 learners.

Similarly, Angodingod Primary School has an enrollment of over 1900 students, with some classes conducted under trees, posing a threat to the lives of pupils and teachers.

Despite these challenges, the schools have improvised temporary structures, with Priscilla Girls Comprehensive Secondary School spending over shilling 13 million on makeshift classrooms and Angodingod Primary School constructing temporary blocks worth shilling 15 million.

The district inspector of schools, Bosco Okiror, acknowledged the challenges but cited limited resources, with the district only able to construct one classroom block per school per financial year.

The district LCV, Geoffrey Omolo, appealed to the central government to grant them full control over funds sent from the center to address pressing needs in education, health, and production.

He said given this situation, parents, through their PTA (Parents and Teachers Association), should be allowed to see how they can support their schools by making some contribution other than waiting on the government.

‘’Let’s celebrate the determination and excellence of these schools and work together to address the infrastructure gaps, ensuring a conducive learning environment for all students.” Omolo said.
