Katakwi students trained in making charcoal briquettes to conserve the environment

He says the new lower secondary curriculum is opening the minds of the young learners through the use of their brains and eliminating some barriers in the community.

Katakwi: In order to restore the greenhouse cover of the earth, students of St. Stephen Secondary School Katakwi have resorted to the manufacturing of smart cooking charcoal known as charcoal briquettes.

Following the new curriculum of the lower secondary school that started in 2020, where learners are expected to use hands-on learning and job creation, learners of St. Stephen Secondary School say this is a way of recovering the green cover, which will change the climate positively by reducing the cutting of trees.

When our reporter visited the school recently, some learners explained that this kind of knowledge they got from school and hands-on will help not only the environment but also put money in our pockets.

They added that there are many ingredients used in making this type of charcoal, and they light up very well compared to normal burnt charcoal.

Another cluster of S.4 learners in the very school have too decided to look for broken jerricans to turn them into shopping buckets.

Students of this project told our reporter that they are doing this to reduce environmental pollution, which will impact communities negatively.

They said their major aim is to remove the polythene bags, which even take a long to decompose if disposed of locally.

However, the school head teacher, James Engole, said this new lower secondary curriculum is opening the minds of the young learners through the use of their brains and eliminating some barriers in the community.

He thanked the ministry of education for bringing such a curriculum that will put money in their pockets, which will not lead to job searching but job creation.
