Karuma, Ayago bridges closed for repairs
The maintenance work is expected to be completed by April 14, 2025, when the bridges will reopen to traffic.

Kiryandongo: Karuma and Ayago Bridges on the Kampala-Gulu Highway have been closed to traffic starting today, Monday, March 24, 2025, for maintenance.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Works and Transport, the bridges will remain closed for three weeks to allow for the installation of expansion joints, which are crucial for maintaining their structural integrity.
To accommodate diverted traffic, the ministry confirmed that the ferries at Masindi Port have undergone full repairs, completed sea trials, and are ready for operation.
The closure was initially scheduled for March 10, 2025, then postponed to March 17, before being pushed to the current date due to delays in repairing the Masindi ferry, which will serve as an alternative route for motorists.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has advised road users to take the following alternative routes during the closure.
Those travellers to Gulu/West Nile can use the Luwero-Kafu-Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park)-Pakwach route or access Gulu via Olwiyo while those travelling to Lira can take the Iganga-Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti-Lira route.
The maintenance work is expected to be completed by April 14, 2025, when the bridges will reopen to traffic.
Karuma Bridge, which spans Karuma Falls along the Kampala-Gulu Highway, was previously closed in May 2024 due to structural defects. After undergoing significant repairs, it was reopened in December 2024.
