Kamuli ringleader of counterfeit note distribution arrested

The fake money is often distributed at night, taking advantage of power outages to target unsuspecting victims.

Kamuli: The Territorial Police of Kamuli have successfully arrested Sowedi Egumbye, the alleged ringleader behind the production and distribution of counterfeit money.

Egumbye was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation early this morning, November 26, 2024, at 4:00 a.m. in Buwagi, Nawanyago Subcounty, Kamuli District.

The arrest comes after numerous complaints about robberies and the circulation of fake currency in the area.

ASP Micheal Kasadha, the spokesperson for Busoga North Police, confirmed the arrest. He stated that the suspect, currently detained at Kamuli Central Police Station, will face charges of forgery and counterfeiting in court.

Local traders, particularly mobile money operators and food vendors in Kamuli Town Council, have reported a significant influx of counterfeit notes in denominations of 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000 shillings.

The fake money is often distributed at night, taking advantage of power outages to target unsuspecting victims.

This arrest follows an earlier operation in October 2024, where police apprehended 22 suspects, including the village chairperson of Buwasa, Nawanyago Subcounty, for similar offenses.

These individuals were accused of causing widespread disruption through scams, theft, and occasional violence.

The community hopes that these operations will curb the circulation of counterfeit money and restore trust in local trade.
