Kamuli, Buyende NRM officials remanded over electoral fraud in party primaries

Authorities have called for calm as investigations continue, assuring the public that those found culpable will face the full force of the law.

Kamuli: Three officials from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party have been remanded to prison over alleged electoral malpractices during the recently concluded parliamentary primaries.

The accused are Baliruno David, a party administrator, and Matovu Vincent, the Buyende District Registrar, both charged with forgery and uttering false documents.

Also implicated is Gwambuga Godfrey, the Kamuli District Registrar, who faces additional charges of falsifying tally registers and conspiracy to commit a felony. Other individuals connected to the case are reportedly still at large.

According to ASP Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North Police spokesperson, the trio was arraigned before Kamuli Chief Magistrate Paul Owino Abdonson on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, and were subsequently remanded to Buyende and Kamuli Government Prisons until July 28, 2025, pending further investigations.

ASP Kasadha stated that the arrests were the result of investigations into allegations of vote manipulation in several sub-counties, where election results were reportedly altered to benefit select candidates.

In one such case, Registrar Gwambuga Godfrey and NRM Administrator Michael Magala allegedly announced falsified results for the Buzaaya County NRM parliamentary primaries.

The results claimed that incumbent MP Martin Muzaale had secured 17,556 votes, while his rival, Bamusibule Kintu Paul, had received only 2,000 votes figures now under scrutiny for credibility.

The developments have reignited concerns over electoral integrity within the NRM’s internal processes, especially in Kamuli District, which has a documented history of election-related violence and political intimidation. Analysts point to ongoing tensions between rival factionsTeam Mulamu, aligned with Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, and Team Kadaga, backing First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga as a contributing factor.

Authorities have called for calm as investigations continue, assuring the public that those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
